TOUTING THRIVES AT MMA2

*Passengers Lament

The activities of touts at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Lagos (MMA) has become a source of worry to airport users, a  News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) check has revealed.

They are found in and around the terminal building of both the domestic and international wing of the airport.

In some cases the touts are seen with airline uniforms pretending to be staff in order to rip passengers off.

NAN reports that the business of touting takes place in various forms and at different levels, one of such is ticket racketeering.

This is a situation whereby unsuspecting passengers are accosted by strangers offering to purchase tickets on their behalf for a fee.

Some passengers, who spoke to NAN on the obnoxious acts, said the touts conspire with airline staff to extort money from them.

They said that they had experienced situations where touts spend long time on queues purchasing tickets for those passengers that they had collected extra money from.

``In this situation until they are attended to, no other passenger will be attended too, in most cases they are the ones that will inform you that the seats are fully booked,’’ a Port Harcourt bound passenger, Ime Utibe said.

Utibe said that the act of soliciting for business or customers in a shameless and uncanny manner does not portray the airport in good light to foreign investors.

Another passenger, Adio Adelani, claimed he was made to cough out extra N2, 000 to a tout to enable him, buy a flight ticket of N18, 000.

``On this day, I got to the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) to catch a flight to Abuja, when I was told at one of the counters that the flight was fully booked.

``As I left the counter, a young man accosted me, claiming to be working for one of the airlines and that he will assist to get a seat, only if I will pay an extra amount, which I obliged.

``But surprisingly, few minutes later he returned with a ticket from the same counter where I was told that the flight was fully booked,’’ he narrated.

Comfort Abang, an Enugu bound passenger stated that the unpatriotic act of touting also existed at the Abuja airport, while advising managers of the airports to do something urgently to eliminate touts completely.

Abang identified some of the mode of touting to include helping passengers in carrying their luggage and checking-in on their behalf.

She said that in this case, many passengers had lost their luggages to the touts.
A tout, who claimed to be an employee of one of the airlines, said he collected N20,000 for an  airline ticket instead of the  actual fare of N18,000.

He said after collecting the money from the unsuspecting passengers, he would go into the counter of the airline and approach the ticket officer to purchase the ticket.

The tout who simply gave his name as Abby, confirmed that he  buys the tickets at the normal fare behind counter and that the profit is shared between him and the ticketing officers.

Corroborating the views of the passengers, the Chief Operating Officer, Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2, Mr Jerome Marinho, said that some of those classified as touts are usually seen with 'On Duty Cards' (ODC) issued by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

He stated that Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Ltd, could do little or nothing to control those with these cards, which allowed certain persons to operate within the airport.

``We held series of meetings with the airlines and other stakeholders operating within the terminal building against the activities of touting around the airport,’’ Marinho said.

The COO disclosed that members of staff of airlines whose operations have been grounded are often seen with such airlines’ identity cards in one form or the other attending to passengers.

Marinho also said that those involved in touting are retired as well as retrenched workers, both of the airport agencies, airlines, and members of security operatives including lay-about as major culprits.

Some airline staff contacted over the issue attributed the menace of touting to increase in joblessness in the society.

The staff who preferred anonymity claimed that their staff were not involved in the act and that they would ensure that their staff abide by the aviation rules and regulations.

But the General Manager, Public Affairs of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr Akin Olukunle, exonerated the authority from any complicity in the handling of touts across the nation’s airports.

He said FAAN does not issue ODC to workers of the airport indiscriminately and that before the issuance, each person wanting it are thoroughly screened by its aviation security personnel.

Olukunle added that as a result of the menace of  touts, FAAN security regularly embarked on raid of touts  and other unscrupulous elements in and around the airport.

``We have regularly made several arrests and have handed them over to the police for prosecution. These actions of ours have drastically reduced touting compared to what used to be in the past,’’ he said. (NAN)

O great job EFCC.I lost complete hope in Nigeria and followed the saying that truly this country is already a failed state like Somalia and Afghanistan where foreign soldiers are fighting for them now as result of continuing looting and celebration of this looter at the national level at the expense of the youths and new generations in this country why the ancient figures in the country since 1960 are the vying for positions in the elected position of the country after they scoundered the looted money they stole during their active time in government. They are never tired to take Nigeria for granted, they do not have shame. Somebody like IBB,OBJ,ATIKU, are not supposed to be left out from the cleaning effort of the EFCC. Majority of Nigerians rest on the effort of EFCC to tackle this political heavy weights and bring them to their knees. They are enemies of Nigeria.EFCC must make sure that it does not spare anyone of them.

EFCC, GOOD JOB, BUT WAIT, WHAT ABOUT SOME PRESENT SERVING STATE GOVERNORS? THAT WANT TO CONTEST FOR THE SECOND TERM, AFTER THREE AND HALF YEARS NOTHING TO SHOW IN THEIR VARIOUS STATES, FROM THE HUNDREDS OF BILLION NAIRA THAT THEY RECEIVED IN THEIR STATES. I ALSO WANT YOU TO KEEP YOUR EVER SHARP EAGLE'S EYES ON THEM. THEY ARE DANGEROUS.

Good job Mrs Farida, I believe that a woman can rule nigeria with the exception of Cecilia Ibru. Some of us are praying fervently to witness  radical changes in Nigeria while some looters are busy planning on how to divert Nigerian money to overseas to buy properties. God knows you all . With the recent development I now know that Nigeria wiil be good soon if we keep both our eyes and ears widely open during the voting period by not allowing unscropulous elements to steal our votes. Mrs Farida should please ask each of the state governors and the chairmen what each of them have done with our money since inception Its then that she will know that only a handful of the politicians, go there to represent the interest of the people.I want Jonathan to ask any unperformed governor of any state impeached before the stipulated four years. We cannot allow our people to be suffering for a lengthy period of time before changes are made. Nigeria, the 6th largest oil producer with nothing to show for it.No good roads , no portable water, no health facilities.Nigerians are scattered all over the world only to be name tag as 419s.Our graduates have turned armed robbers and some engaged in drugs while some are just roaming the streets aimlessly.I wonder where they are going to keep the stolen monies when they die. They behave as if there is no tomorrow. We should not allow anybody to impose any politician on us. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.!Honestly at 50 we should be well grown but we are still crawling Our useless leaders have made us to be crippled for 50 years .we should all say NO to the looters.Am from south west but before man and God, I don't care where the president comes from as long as we are still one Nigeria. My kind of person must be accountable, honest, able to conduct free and fair election and to complete all the abandoned projects.Able to suply portable water, to construct good roads, to resucittate the electicity. provide security all over Nigeria

LEGAL BATTLE BETWEEN MAEVIS AND FAAN ON REVENUE COLLECTION

*Court Adjourned Hearing to Nov.,1st 2010

By Lateef Lawal
The Federal High Court in Lagos yesterday adjourned the legal battle between Maevis Nigeria Limited and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria(FAAN) to November, 1st 2010.
Maevis, one of the concessionaires of the Authority  had sued FAAN challenging the alleged plan of the defendant to cede part of its revenue generating sources to another company against the tenets of the agreement between the two parties which grant exclusivity to Maevis to collect all revenues for FAAN..
When the case came up for hearing before the Honourable Justice J. Nyako, there were fire works between the lawyers of the plaintiffs and the defendants when the lead counsel of Maevis, Dr Abiodun Layonu(SAN) pleaded for the committance of FAAN for contempt of court over the closure of its premises in Abuja by the agents of the Authority despite the earlier court order asking both parties to maintain the status-quo.
The lead counsel to FAAN,Mr Obi Okwusogu(SAN) countered by ,saying that the Authority was not a party to the alleged action and that when information got to FAAN of the said action by some people, the management immediately ordered its officials to ensure that there was no disruption of activities in the Abuja office and peace was restored. On this premise, Okwusogu told the court that FAAN was not liable for contempt of court as pleaded by the plaintiff’s lawyer and Justice Nyako consequently dismissed the plaintiff’s contempt plea.
However, proceedings on the main issues before the court could not be taken due to technicalities discovered on the fillings before the court by the plaintiff and due the urgency of the matter before the court the lead counsel to Maevis pleaded with the court for more time to enable his client file the necessary papers to support its case against FAAN. It was on this basis that Justice Nyako adjourned the suit to next  week Monday (November,1st 2010).
Before yesterday’s adjournment, there was a mild drama in the court room when  members of the National Union of Air Transport Employees(NUATE) led by its First Vice-President, Comrade Aturu and those of the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria(ATSSSAN) led by Comrade Philip Emeto and FAAN Pensioners Association led by Comrade Ope Rasaki besieged the venue with several of their members carrying placards bearing various inscriptions asking the court to ensure that justice was on the side of FAAN.
The scene was however not acceptable to the court and Justice Nyako ordered that all the placards should be folded while those who have no place to seat in the courtroom should vacate the premises and the workers consequently left the room to take refuge under the shade outside the court room till 3.15pm when the case was adjourned.
Present at the court yesterday were the Director of Administration of FAAN, Mr Niyi Ajakaye, the Director of Environment,Architect Mohammed Bello and the General Manager, Public Affairs, Mr Akin Olukunle.

RE-'2011 Election: EFCC Keeps Watch On Personalities Involved In High Profile Cases'

Comment from: Ikechukwu
This is just the beginning and it's a good start, so far. Finally, everything is taking shape. This indictment will have to narrow down to all the various ignorant illiterates who have been elected as ward Councillors of different local governments. Subsequently, only those qualified, willing, selfless and ready will dominate Nigerian politics and Nigeria will become home again to its citizens scattered all over the globe.

Comment from: Chizoma
What a shameful thing. They are disgrace to politics. They went to power
for their own interest and the interest of their families. I congratulate you EFCC.
They think they will go free, but forgotten that everyday is for a thief but
one day is for the owner of the house. Their cups indeed were overflown, so
must face the music. How could they be so curel, eating billions and billions
when poor people are dying everyday because of insufficient  food
and poor condition of health. Honestly, they have no remorse, conscience
nor fear of God. Only greed full their minds yet forgetting that whatsoever
one does in this wicked world so shall he reap.
Finally, I am convinced now that the eyes of all, both home and abroad
Nigerians are wide open for this forth coming election no one can fool us again.
.Pls, EFCC keep it up, enough is enough.
Once again, Thank you for the Job well done.
May The Almighty Father continue To empower you for this work He has called you
to do.

Comment from: Dapo Ogundimu USA
With this EFCC cracking down on corrupt politicians, heads of agencies, Universities and individuals, it looks like it is no more "business as usual". One thing is to have the list out but another thing is to really keep them out of holding position of trust for good. These corrupt individuals see government coffers as their private slush fund. Can you imagine having those stolen fund available for the populace, what a nice country Nigeria will be. EFCC, more grease to your elbow. Jonathan, may the Lord give you the political courage to go through with this banishment. And this is what I am thinking.
Comment from: Moses
I CAN SEE NOW THAT WE ARE MOVING FORWARD AS A NATION,EFCC HELP US TO COLLECT ALL THESE LOOTINGS FROM ALL THE ENEMIES OF OUR NATION. MORE GREASE TO YOUR ELBOWS MADAM WAZIRI FARIDA. GOD WILL CONTINUE TO GUIDE YOU WITH YOUR TEAM.

Comment from: Mande Garba
Search for more, many are still hidden. A very well done job. This shows that what Man can do, Woman attempted to do it even more better.

Comment from: Gozie Nantes
Please what of Dr Peter Odili former Rivers State Governor. Is he above the law ?

Comment from: Kevin Onukogu
I think EFCC is trying. However, due to the way corruption has permeated our country, I think the EFCC should be a very big organization, with chapters in each state, and federal capital. Then a national office at Abuja, cordinating all local chapters.

Comment from: James
EFCC, need our unflinching support across all sector, hence the institution has being let down by some selfish individual whom we think are working for the good of our country. Having said that people like Fayose would be running for LP in Akure, its appalling and despicable. God bless Nigeria

Comment from: Sammy Idip
I want to know how Economic and Financial Crimes Commission managed to have current information about the corruption and fraud cases among so call leaders in my country.

Comment from: Mred
it is not enough to stop these people from running for office. these criminals should be severely punished and all their ill-gotten gains seized. In China, these people would definitely have been executed if found guilty. The audacity that as a governement official, you can fleece the the people's money and have no fear of being punished is unbelievable. Hope the EFCC is serious in its efforts.

Comment from: John
Though EFCC is starting a little late, it is better than doing nothing at all. The joy and hope of all of us is not in seeing these "thieves" (or better to call them armed robbers) prosecuted but in (i) recovering all stolen wealths returned to national covers (ii) not sparing anyone or making some to be above the law regaredless of positions (iii) separate your activities from politics. (iv) Utilizing the recovered money and propertities for the cizitens' benefits
This is a divine call on your part both to the Almighty and humanity. You cannot afford to mess up this service as history will judge you and you will be judged by history. Fear no foe and may God guide and protect you all. Good luck.

Comment from: Prince
Kudos to EFCC but the list would be better if it extends to the three-tiers of government including serving office holders who have resisted invitation and arrest recently.
These people should be kept on watch list and not allowed to hold any office in their entire life time.
They and their companies should be black listed from participating in government contracts at all levels. Let them eat what they have already stolen.

Comment from: Sunny Metu
EFCC should please not forget prominent thieves especially , in Imo state. All the erstwhile LGA-chairmen. . . .I mean all of them , PLUS Prof. Osuji (former minister of education), Former senate president Wagbara ( of Abia state), etc. . . . .and why has Gov. Orji Uzo Kalu been on bail since 2008 . These trials are taking too long , Mrs Waziri. We are hungry for justice , and we are not talking of 6-month jail terms please . A 6-month jail term is no deterrent , at all. We want 10-year minimum jail terms please , Justice delayed is justice denied ! !.

Comment from: Kenny Okechi USA
Nigerians must be tired over EFCC and her inability to send these many corrupt Nigerians to Jail.

Comment from: Okolo Milford
EFCC,thank you for all the sacrifices and efforts towards rebranding our image by exposing these Evil and corrupt politicians. But still some big names did not appear on your list such as DEVILS like 'IBB,OBJ,ATIKU' and many more.Lets call a spade a spade ,you can't fight corruption one sided,it has to go in accordance with the law and law is no respecter of any person. If truely, EFCC wants to annihilate corruption in Nigeria you have to start from the head. Those three names above,if sincerely you can bring them to book then we will know you are making progress because you don't need evidence. The oil wind fall 12.4 billion,DELE GIWA,EJIGBO PLANE CRASH,JUNE 12,16 BILLION DOLLARS LIGHT PROJECT,HALLIBURTON just to mention but a few, these are more than enough to put behind bars for life.

Comment from: Luke Olisewenwa
EFCC, you have started well. But why are the IBBs, OBJs, Atikus, Peter Odilis and their partners in crime against Nigerians missing from your list. You would have rubbished all your efforts if these godfathers and sponsors of curruption are missing from the list. Every Nigerian of age in the 1980s would NOT FORGET in a hurry how this evil genius (IBB) bombed our dear Dele Giwa out of existence, stole our 12.4 billion dollar oil windfall and instituted 419 in Nigeria. After insulting the collective intelligence of Nigerians by refusing to appear before the Oputa Panel to defend all the allegations against him, he is gunning to return to power to 'misrule' same Nigerians - God forbid. We are all living witnesses to the looting OBJ inflicted on the nation - rising from the near bankcruptcy status in 1999 to a multi billion dollar superman, using our resources in just 8 years to build such an empire (Bells Group of Schools, Obasanjo Farms and Presidential? (Obasanjo) Library). Thank goodness his Transcorp has collapsed.
The case of Davi... Mark and his co-looters in the NASS is for another day. I hope the situation would not degenerate to a situation where sucide bombers would be visiting them at function venues. Please, update the list to include them to convince us of your sincerity with this war. We are looking forward to the day when a Jerry John Rawlings would rise to cleanse the mess in Nigeria.

CHI! CHI!CHI!, As Chile Rescues Trapped Miners After 70Days In The 'Womb' of Mother Earth

More than a third of the trapped Chilean miners have now made the journey from their half-mile-deep dungeon to the surface, emerging to the joyous tears of their relatives and cries of "Chi! Chi! Chi! Le! Le! Le!" Edison Pena Villarroel, 34, was the 12th person rescued, coming up just over 10 hours after the rescue capsule dubbed "Phoenix" extracted the first miner. He is known as an Elvis fan who led the miners in singing and ran six miles a day in the cramped chamber to keep fit.
He was preceded by Jorge Galleguillos, 55, who has worked the length of Chile in various mines.
With the operation appearing to go like clockwork, the miners jubilantly embraced wives, children and rescuers, and looked remarkably composed despite languishing for 69 days in the depths of a mine that easily could have been their tomb. It is the longest anyone has ever been trapped underground and survived.
The anxiety that had accompanied the final days of preparation melted away at 12:11 a.m. Wednesday when the stoutest of the 33 miners, Florencio Avalos, 31, emerged from the missile-like rescue capsule smiling broadly after his half-mile journey to the surface.
In a din of cheers, he hugged his sobbing 7-year-old son Bairon and wife and then President Sebastian Pinera, who has been deeply involved in the rescue effort, which has become a matter of national pride.
It had not been planned for Avalos' family to join rescuers at the opening of the shaft, but young Bairon had other ideas and insisted on being there.
"I told Florencio that few times have I ever seen a son show so much love for his father," the Chilean president said. "This won't be over until all 33 are out. Hopefully the spirit of these miners will remain forever with us ... This country is capable of great things."
Avalos, second-in-command of the miners, was chosen to be first because he was in the best condition. He has been so shy that he volunteered to handle the camera rescuers sent down so he wouldn't have to appear on the videos that the miners sent up.
An hour later and the most ebullient of the bunch, Mario Sepulveda, 40, was out. He hugged his wife, Elvira, and then jubilantly handed souvenir rocks from his underground prison to laughing rescuers.
"I'm so happy!" Sepulveda yelled, grinning, punching his fist in the air and hugging everyone in sight.
Sepulveda later said he had spent the last 10 weeks "between God and the devil."
"They fought, God won," he added.
Like the wives on the surface who had their hair and nails done for the occasion, the men looked groomed and clean-shaven as they emerged despite spending more than two months deep beneath the surface.
A third Chilean miner, Juan Illanes, 52, followed after another hour. He called the trip to the surface a "cruise" and then jumped up and down as if to prove his strength.
The lone Bolivian, Carlos Mamani, 24, was pulled out fourth, and later met Bolivian President Evo Morales, NBC News reported.
Mamani was greeted by his wife, Veronica, with a hug and kiss that knocked off her white hardhat as Chile's president and first lady held small Bolivian flags. Mamani also gestured with both forefingers at the Chilean flag on his T-shirt and shouted "Gracias, Chile!" before a round of backslapping with rescuers.
Jimmy Sanchez, 19, hugged his father after reaching the surface. He was the fifth worker to leave the mine.
Through the first five rescues, the operation brought up a miner roughly every hour — holding to a schedule announced earlier to get all out in about 36 hours. Then, rescuers paused to lubricate the spring-loaded wheels that give the capsule a smooth ride through the hard-rock shaft before continuing the rescues.
Osman Araya, 30, emerged sixth and embraced his tearful wife, Angelica. The seventh miner, Jose Ojeda, who turned 47 on Monday, was rescued next and was met by his stepdaughter, Elisabeth. He made headlines for writing the message, "We are OK the 33 of us in the refuge."
In this screen grab taken from video, Mario Gomez, the ninth miner to be rescued, kneels in prayer shortly after his rescue at the San Jose Mine near Copiapo, Chile.
The eighth miner, Claudio Yanez, 34, emerged just as dawn was breaking at around 7 a.m. local time (6 a.m. ET). He was followed by
Mario Gomez, 63, the oldest to be trapped underground and who suffers from silicosis, a lung disease common to miners.
He hugged his wife, Lilian Ramirez, who fears he will return to mining, even after this ordeal, and then dropped to his knees to pray with his yellow hard hat still perched on his head.
He was then checked into a field hospital erected at the mine, where he was visited by Pinera. "Thank you," Gomez said simply.
The first men rescued were the "young ones, the healthier ones that could handle the ascent," said Chile's health minister, Jaime Manalich. The next group of men being winched up the shaft, including Gomez, were in "more precarious health."
Alex Vega, 31, was the tenth to be rescued, and gave two thumbs-up as he came out of the capsule and embraced his wife. Then came Galleguillos, who was embraced and slapped on the back several times before he was taken to a stretcher, and Pena.

National crisis
When the last man surfaces, it promises to end a national crisis that began when 700,000 tons of rock collapsed Aug. 5, sealing the men in the lower reaches of the mine.
After the first capsule came out of the manhole-sized opening, Chile exploded in joy and relief at that first, breakthrough rescue just after midnight in the coastal Atacama desert.
In the capital, Santiago, a cacophony of motorists' horns sounded. In the nearby regional capital of Copiapo, from which 24 of the miners hail, the mayor canceled school so parents and children could "watch the rescue in the warmth of the home."
The operation began when mine rescue expert Manuel Gonzalez of the state copper company Codelco grinned and made the sign of the cross as he was lowered to the trapped men — apparently without incident.
He was followed by Roberto Rios, a paramedic with the Chilean navy's special forces, who helped prepare the miners for rescue.
"We made a promise to never surrender, and we kept it," Pinera said as he waited to greet the miners, whose endurance and unity captivated the world as Chile meticulously prepared their rescue.

Last one out
The last miner out has been decided: Shift foreman Luis Urzua, whose leadership was credited for helping the men endure 17 days with no outside contact after the collapse. The men made 48 hours' worth of rations last before rescuers reached them with a narrow borehole to send down more food.
Urzua's neighbors told the AP he probably insisted on being the last one up.
"He's a very good guy — he keeps everybody's spirits up and is so responsible — he's going to see this through to the end," said neighbor Angelica Vicencio, who has led a nightly vigil outside the Urzua home in Copiapo.
Janette Marin, sister-in-law of miner Dario Segovia, said the order of rescue didn't matter.
This won't be a success unless they all get out," she said, echoing the solidarity that the miners and people across Chile have expressed.
The paramedics can change the order of rescue based on a brief medical check once they're in the mine.
Chile has taken extensive precautions to ensure the miners' privacy, using a screen to block the top of the shaft from the more than 1,000 journalists at the scene.
The miners were ushered through a tunnel built of metal containers to an ambulance for a trip of several hundred yards to a triage station for a medical check. They will then be taken by helicopter to a hospital.
The only media allowed to record them coming out of the shaft will be a government photographer and Chile's state TV channel, whose live broadcast was delayed by 30 seconds or more to prevent the release of anything unexpected. Photographers and camera operators were on a platform more than 300 feet away.
The worst technical problem that could happen, rescue coordinator Andre Sougarett told The Associated Press, is that "a rock could fall," potentially jamming the capsule partly up the shaft.

Claustrophobia fears
Panic attacks are the rescuers' biggest concern. The miners will not be sedated — they need to be alert in case something goes wrong. If a miner must get out more quickly, rescuers will accelerate the capsule to a maximum 3 meters per second, Health Minister Jaime Manalich said.
The rescue is risky simply because no one else has ever tried to extract miners from such depths, said Davitt McAteer, who directed the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration in the Clinton administration. A miner could get claustrophobic and do something to damage the capsule. Or a falling rock could wedge it in the shaft. Or the cable could get hung up. Or the rig that pulls the cable could overheat.
"You can be good and you can be lucky. And they've been good and lucky," McAteer told the AP. "Knock on wood that this luck holds out for the next 33 hours."
Mining Minister Laurence Golborne, whose management of the crisis has made him a media star in Chile, said authorities had already thought of everything.
"There is no need to try to start guessing what could go wrong. We have done that job," Golborne said. "We have hundreds of different contingencies."
As for the miners, Manalich said, "It remains a paradox — they're actually much more relaxed than we are."
Rescuers finished reinforcing the top of the 2,041-foot escape shaft Monday, and the 13-foot capsule descended flawlessly in tests. The capsule — the biggest of three built by Chilean navy engineers — was named Phoenix for the mythical bird that rises from ashes. It is painted in the white, blue and red of the Chilean flag.
The miners were to be closely monitored from the moment they're strapped in the capsule. They were given a high-calorie liquid diet donated by NASA, designed to keep them from vomiting as the capsule rotates 10 to 12 times through curves in the 28-inch-diameter escape hole.
A video camera in the escape capsule watched for panic attacks. The miners have oxygen masks and two-way voice communication.
Their pulse, skin temperature and respiration rate are constantly measured through a monitor around their abdomens. To prevent blood clotting from the quick ascent, they took aspirin and wore compression socks.
The miners also had sweaters for the shift in climate from about 90 degrees underground to near freezing on the surface after nightfall.
Engineers inserted steel piping at the top of the shaft, which is angled 11 degrees off vertical before plunging like a waterfall. Drillers had to curve the shaft to pass through "virgin" rock, narrowly avoiding collapsed areas and underground open spaces in the overexploited mine, which had operated since 1885.
After medical checks and visits with family members selected by the miners, the men will be flown to the hospital in Copiapo, a 10-minute ride away. Two floors were prepared where the miners will receive physical and psychological exams and be kept under observation in a ward as dark as a movie theater.
Chilean air force Lt. Col. Aldo Carbone said helicopter pilots were issued night-vision goggles but won't fly unless it is clear of the thick Pacific Ocean fog that rolls in at night.
U.S. President Barack Obama praised rescuers, who include many Americans. "While that rescue is far from over and difficult work remains, we pray that by God's grace, the miners will be able to emerge safely and return to their families soon," he said.
Chile has promised that its care of the miners won't end for six months at least — not until they can be sure that each miner has readjusted.
Psychiatrists and other experts in surviving extreme situations predict their lives will be anything but normal.
Since Aug. 22, when a narrow bore hole broke through to their refuge and the miners stunned the world with a note, scrawled in red ink, disclosing their survival, their families have been exposed in ways they never imagined.
They had to describe their physical and mental health in detail with teams of doctors and psychologists. In some cases, when both wives and lovers claimed the same man, everyone involved had to face the consequences.
As trying as their underground ordeal has been, the miners now face challenges so bewildering that no amount of coaching can fully prepare them.
The world is intensely curious to hear their tale of survival. They have been invited to presidential palaces, take all-expenses-paid vacations and appear on countless TV shows.
Sepulveda appeared well aware of his budding options. His performance exiting from the shaft appeared to confirm what many Chileans thought when they saw his engaging performances in videos sent up from below — that he could have a future as a TV personality.
But he tried to quash the idea as he spoke to viewers of Chile's state television channel while sitting with his wife and children shortly after his rescue.
"The only thing I'll ask of you is that you don't treat me as an artist or a journalist, but as a miner," he said. "I was born a miner and I'll die a miner."

One by One, Chilean Miners Make It to FreedomUpdated

Eleven of the 33 miners trapped half a mile under the Chilean desert for a record-breaking 69 days have emerged to fresh air, tearful hugs from their families and the nation's president and jubilation from around the world. The first miner to emerge was 31-year-old Florencio Avalos. His sobbing 7-year-old son, Bairon, threw his arms around him in what's likely to become an iconic image of celebrations after the miners' perseverance, which quickly became a national symbol for Chile and a global media obsession.
"I told Florencio that few times have I ever seen a son show so much love for his father," Chilean President Sebastian Pinera said, according to The Associated Press.
Wearing sunglasses to protect his eyes, Avalos was freed shortly after midnight, ascending in a 28-inch-wide escape capsule painted with Chile's red, white and blue colors, and named Phoenix for a mythical bird that rises from ashes. Horns blared across the Atacama desert in darkness as the capsule finally reached the manhole-sized opening, to cheers of "Chi! Chi! Chi! Le! Le! Le!" Avalos climbed out and hugged his two sons and wife, then Pinera, and gave a thumbs-up before boarding an ambulance for medical checks.
The de facto deputy chief of the miners, Avalos was chosen to be rescued first because he's in the best health and able to troubleshoot glitches along the harrowing pathway up. There appeared to be none. He was followed an hour later by fellow miner Mario Sepulveda, who emerged with his physical strength -- and sense of humor -- intact. He jumped up and down, pumped his arms and led a crowd of onlookers in a chant for Chile. Then while being hauled away on a stretcher, he asked his wife "How's the dog?" and handed out rocks as joke souvenirs to his rescuers.
The Chilean newspaper Las Ultimas Noticias splashed his picture on its front page under the headline "Super Mario."
Speaking to reporters, he turned serious: "I've been near God but I've also been near the devil," Sepulveda said, according to The Daily Telegraph. "They fought but God won."
