The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally declared Rotimi Akeredolu, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as winner of the Ondo state governorship election.
According to Abdulganiyu Ambali, a professor and returning officer for the election, Akeredolu polled 244,842 votes to defeat Eyitayo Jegede, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who recorded 150,380 votes.
Olusola Oke of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) placed third with 126,889 votes.
“Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, and scored the highest number of votes, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected,” Ambali said.
Meanwhile, in order to forestall the breakdown of law and order in Akure, the Ondo State capital, high security presence has been deployed to strategic areas of the town.
Although the town appears quiet and residents were seen going about their activities, the beefing up of security in the state capital was a preemptive measure since the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Eyitayo Jegede, who lost to the eventual winner, Mr. Olurotimi Akeredolu, was from the town.
The high presence of security agencies with sniffer dogs were seen in areas like Alagbaka, Adegbola, Oba Adesida road, GRA, Oyemekun, among others.
