IMPORTATION OF SUB-STANDARD GOODS FROM CHINA:Chief Uwaekwe Blame Unscrupulus Businessmen

Some unscrupulous Nigerian traders and businessmen have been blamed for flooding the country with sub-standard goods from the Republic of China.
According to the National Co-coordinator of the Nigeria-China Business Council,Chief Matthew Uwaekwe who exonerated China and her manufacturers of goods,it was traders from our country that used to place orders for inferior goods so as to maximize profits.
Despite the fact that both the Chinese and Nigerian governments signed agreement on dis-encouraging the importation or exportation of sub-standard goods from either country and largely majority of Nigeria importers complied, he noted that,"Out of every twelve disciples there must always be a judas".
Currently,Chief Uwaekwe said the balance of trade between the two countries was heavily favored China with over $7billion while Nigeria recorded a paltry a little over $500m.
He therefore stressed the need to reverse the trend by encouraging Chinese entrepreneurs to come and invest in Nigeria in such areas like-manufacturing of goods, power projects, agriculture, telecommunications and other allied developmental projects.
In doing this, he said that attention should be shifted from investing in cities to encouraging the shift of attention to rural areas to checkmate the drifting of people from rural to urban centres.

ATTEMPT BY A NIGERIAN MEMBER OF AL QUAEDA TO BOMB PLANE FOILED

A Nigerian passenger linked with Bin Laden's Al-Quaeda terrorist network on a Northwest Airlines A330-3000 attempted to detonate an explosive device while the aircraft was approaching Detroit. Flight 253 was an international flight from Amsterdam to Detroit. Reports said that a passenger, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (earlier reports had his name as Abdul Mudallad), a 23-year-old Nigerian national, allegedly had the device strapped to one of his legs, and that the device was triggered during descent (about 20 minutes before landing) and started a small fire.

The flight, operated by Northwest Airlines using an Airbus 330-300 aircraft with 278 passengers on board, landed safely, and Mudallad, the only person injured, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of serious burns.
A passenger  stated that the suspect was sitting in seat 19A, that he heard a popping sound, followed by a glow and the smell of smoke .
Nearby passengers subdued the suspect. Another passenger said that she was in seat 18B, and she heard a loud bang after the aircraft had lowered its landing gear.
Reportedly, at first she thought the plane might have gotten a flat tyre, but then she said saw a flame leap from the lap of a man sitting in the row behind her in the window seat, 19A. The suspect was subdued, and moved to another part of the aircraft for the rest of the flight.
Northwest flight 253 had departed Amsterdam at about 0845 local time Friday morning, and arrived at Detroit, MI at about noon local time. The flight crew had declared some kind of emergency before the landing.
The Airbus A330 had 278 passengers on board. Early reports also indicate that the suspect started his journey on a KLM flight from Nigeria to Amsterdam, and had connected with flight 253 in Amsterdam.
The device was described by unidentified US officials as a mixture of powder and liquid. Other reports included details such as the suspect using a syringe to inject some kind of liquid into the device. Rep. Peter King, a US congressman from New York State, claims that the suspect's name did not appear on any of the terrorist watch lists maintained by US authorities, but that his name did turn up in other terrorism-related databases maintained by intelligence officials.
An unidentified US official also claims that the suspect told investigators that he was given the device by al Qaeda operatives in Yemen, where he was also given instructions on how to detonate it.
An unidentified White House official claims that this event was “an attempted act of terrorism.” According to this Trip Advisor seat map of a Northwest A330-300, seat 19A would be a window seat situated directly over the left wing.
The White House has reportedly ordered unspecified increased security procedures at airports around the country, though the Department of Homeland Security threat level for the air transportation system has not changed from it current level of high (orange) to severe (red).

AIRPORT ROAD TRAFFIC

*FAAN, POLICE SYNERGIZE

The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr. Richard Aisuebeogun, has appealed to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Police Command to assist the Authority in reducing heavy traffic on roads within the airport.
Mr. Aisuebeogun who made the appeal while receiving the new airport Police Commissioner, Mr. Danazumi Dome in his office at FAAN’s Headquarters yesterday, said security and traffic management at the Lagos airport were crucial and of utmost concern to the Authority.
While seeking for absolute support of the Police on security at airports, the FAAN boss reiterated that aviation security is globally complemented by the intelligence and defence lines and he urged the new Airport Commissioner to maintain the synergy that exists between the Police and FAAN at the Lagos airport.
He assured the Police Commissioner of the Authority’s unflinching support and readiness to assist the Police in their welfare within the available resources.
In his response, Dome assured the cooperation of his command in bringing traffic congestion on airport roads under control. According to him, traffic at the international axis of the airport has been reduced following the intervention of his officers. He explained that his command had already mapped out strategies to arrest traffic congestion from the Ikeja over-head bridge down to the airport. He added that touting at the airport had gone down gradually at the airport since his assumption of duty.
The Aviation Security Services is currently discussing with the leadership of the police at the airports on modality of operation to reduce the traffic.
FAAN, being the agency in charge of managing airports in Nigeria is currently playing host to all the security and paramilitary agencies in the Country.
He noted that FAAN has been providing office accommodation for the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Custom Services, Immigration, State Security Services, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, and Nigerian Army among others in the airport.
